Chief Metallurgist
Job Description
- Reports directly to the Quality Manager.
- Interfaces with customers, Shipping/Receiving Inspectors, Supervisors, Plant Manager, and Quality Manager.
- Responsible for overseeing overall operation of the Metallurgical Laboratory and to train lab personnel in preparing samples, observing them, and recording the results of microstructure and microhardness evaluations as well as all other measurements within metallurgical requirements.
- Directs creation and periodically reviews all instructions and procedures pertaining to Met Lab and production processing operations.
- Is involved in all experimental work in the plant dedicated to new projects.
- Has input into quality programs, i.e. NADCAP, AS 9000 and ISO9001 or to assist in continuous improvement of the plant production performance.
- Receives Pyrometry training through eQualearn or another reparable source (Quality Manager). Refresher training is scheduled on an as need basis.
- Participates in process capability measurements (Cp and Cpk).
- Provides statistical techniques for preventive actions to reach the goal of zero defects in heat treatment practice.
Derivative of Job
- Safety glasses, steel toe shoes, gloves and face shield required.
- Minimum exposure to heat and smoke from furnaces. Caution with chemicals.
- Contact with chemicals.
- Some lifting required, up to 25 lbs.
Employment Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering from an accredited university or HS diploma with ten years of appropriate metallurgical training under a Ph.D. metallurgist.
- Management skills training preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years metallurgical experience in the heat-treating field required.
Training Requirements
- Hands-on experience in the heat treating industry.
- Periodic attendance at metallurgical conferences with successful certification from those conferences.
- Conducts all classroom-training requirements required for all Aerospace operators.
- Training in management skills.
- Annual training in JASCO Heat Treating’s safety and environmental policy.
